Flau'jae Johnson Opts Out of WNBA Draft for NIL Opportunities

LSU guard Flau'jae Johnson has decided to forgo the 2025 WNBA Draft instead of returning for her senior season to further capitalize on Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) opportunities. While she has not yet confirmed whether she will remain at LSU or enter the transfer portal before the April 23 deadline, her decision underscores the growing impact of NIL in shaping athletes' career paths.

Johnson, a standout player and third-team All-American, averaged 18.6 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 2.5 assists per game this past season. Her marketability extends beyond the court; she is a rapper with three albums and holds endorsement deals with brands like Powerade, Puma, Amazon, and Experian. Her NIL valuation is estimated at $1.5 million.

By delaying her entry into the WNBA, Johnson positions herself to benefit from a new collective bargaining agreement and a $200 million TV deal set to take effect in 2026, which are expected to substantially raise player salaries. This strategic move allows her to maximize her earning potential both through NIL deals and future professional contracts.

As Johnson continues to evaluate her options, her decision highlights the evolving landscape of college athletics, where financial considerations and personal branding play increasingly significant roles in athletes' choices.
